MY First Exhibition @Sarasa Nishijin in Kyoto

It's been a while since I did my first exhibition on 10th July, 2011, but I could make a time to post my stuff from the exhibit, so here they are. :) It was my first try doing Japanese painting. It was quite challenging to create those colors and textures that I wanted with the Japanese pigments because they are so delicate and sensitive that they can be broken and come off easily unless you mix them with the glue in the right proportion. I love those Japanese pigments made of nature. They are just beautiful. I also loved to use a real gold and silver. They are used quite often in Japanese painting. I created those paintings for victims in the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. I sold my postcards of those paintings at the gallery for Japan earthquake & tsunami relief fund raising. Heianjingu shrine in Kyoto

I've felt depressed by what's been going on in Japan. Especially I feel just sorry for orphans who lost their parents in the earthquake and tsunami. Even 101 kids have lost and missed their parents according to today's report and it will be considered to be more... I couldn't stop crying when I heard lots of sad stories about the orphans over TV and internet.
Spring has come. Cherry blossoms are in full bloom here in Kyoto and so pretty now. They should be in full bloom in the devastating areas as well, but I am just lost for words and helpless when I think of their fears and sorrows without their dads and moms... I just silently pray for them. If God is on our side, may God give them lights and warm their hearts gently like this spring.

I practiced figure drawing with Indian ink in Chinese painting class today.
Although there are some lines I don't like, as a whole I'm quite happy with this result.

I did rough design, color key(digital) and outline(indian ink) for this gold fish painting. I changed a lot for the rough one and colored it with photoshop, but maybe the final one isn't going to look exactly the same as the digital one. I'd like to play and explore with my new Japanese pigment to find the beauty of Japanese painting as much as I can. I'm quite excited about it :)

I　had a chance to do 5-10 mins figure drawing with indian ink and brush in class.

It was hard for me to control the strokes with water and paper, but this might be a good practice for me to come up with speed and not to stick to one line and move on to next lines with quick decision. I'd like to keep practicing this approach.

I still haven't done color keys for these, but I'm gonna post them later.
I'm going to paint them with the method of Japanese painting. (with Indian ink and Japanese pigments)
I'm very excited about doing a new approach for my new works, but at the same time, I'm not used to using a new medium, so I'm a bit worried about If I can succeed in making what I want to do... This can be adventurous and I like it because I'm an adventurous person ;) Enjoy it!

I animated this kid and goldfish for our 3 scenes animation assignment. I asked my landlady's children to act as voice actors for my characters. Their voices fit with these characters and I was quite happy with it. I'll post the animation later.

Finally I posted my current animation(rough). It's been a while to post animation since last time I posted my animation... I'm kind of in panic to try to complete every single assignment enough to put them in my portfolio. If I try to make them refine, it would take much more time than I thought, and I'm running out of time :'( And animation is the most thing that takes much energy out of me because it needs real concentration to make it look well done. But I'll make this fixed and more refined to make it look better.

I really enjoyed this film making assignment. It was my first time to shoot with video camera, so some of the scenes look blury... I couldn't solve this problem because of my lack of knowledge about the camera. What I leraned from this project is that it needs rhythm and effective sounds in synch with the scenes to make horror movie alive and not to make audience bored. And also, I learned how difficult it was to shoot at night time. Thank you for helping me with acting, Reetta & Dennis! I really appreciate it! Hope you like it!

I taped my voice and animated it in tune with the voice with FLASH.
I made English and Japanese version both.

Here is a certain place where is crowded with Japanese pubs in Osaka. I bumped into this place on my way to the station. I thought it was beautiful with contrast between darkness and brightness of lots of colorful lights and signs, so I wanted to use it as a reference. Also, I tried to make the perspective look farther than the actual place.

Rie Mandala, she is a wood blockprint artist, a collage artist and a model for drawing. I've met her at the art studio recently and I asked her to be my model. She has some sort of different atmosphere from Japanese, that is because she used to live in Bali studying a wood blockprint and a collage and then traveled around in Asia. Her artworks reflect those tastes, which are beautiful and gorgeous with fusion of Japan and some other Asian countries. You can see her artworks below on your right side.

For me, a pose like this is always difficult; it's hard to create a drawing that's not flat and static at this angle. I concentrated on the head and the collarbones to try to look the neck the joint between the head and the body naturally. Drawing the head like this angle was super difficult to create the illusion of space and the sense of stretching in her body. It still looks awkward though. I'm still struggling with it.

I hope this one is better than the one above. I was trying to be careful about strokes of pencil. The one above looks rough with too much strokes. So I drew with slight strokes not to explain the details too much and to leave her white and smooth skin as it is. I wish it could work...
